紫川は1970年代まで工業排水や生活排水などによって汚染が急速に進み、水質汚濁や悪臭に悩まされてきましたが、公害対策や市民と行政が一体となった浄化運動、さらに下水道の整備などによって水質が向上してきました。現在は、都心を流れる川でありながら、アユやシロウオが遡上し、上流ではホタルが舞うなど、市民にとってなくてはならない憩いの川となっています。
快適な都市環境づくりを目指す北九州市が小倉の中心を流れる紫川をシンボルリバーとして整備しました。10の橋にはそれぞれ海、火、木・・・といった自然をテーマにデザインされています。

OgaiBashi is a nickname is"The Bridge of the Waterfowl" . The sculpture put on centrally of the bridge, which made a gull a motif.
おうがい橋は別名”水鳥の橋”と呼ばれています。小倉にゆかりの深い明治の文豪、森鴎外。橋の中央には「鴎（かもめ）」をモチーフにした彫刻が置かれています。
