A quick grab and go out in the country. Enjoy the ride and the wildlife. Although these caches are in a series, they are all stand-alone caches, and they are not connected to a final cache.
When our kids were little we made a habit of taking them for a car ride out into the country just before bed. Bath, jammies and head to the car . . . this was the routine almost every night during the Spring, Summer and Fall seasons. By the time we got home, both kids were asleep and we were quite relaxed from a very enjoyable drive in the country.
We always told the kids we were going on a "Deer Run" because we would usually see several white-tailed deer. But as we drove around the St. George area we would also see pheasants, American kestrels, red-tailed hawks, Baltimore orioles, indigo bunting, belted kingfishers, falcons, wild turkeys, great blue heron, night heron, several species of ducks, loons, swans, geese, turtles, beavers, muskrats, coyotes, fishers, foxes, racoons, jack rabbits, cottontail rabbits, skunks . . . well, yes . . . the list goes on and on . . .
As the kids got older, we would log the species of animal we saw each night in a journal, and eventually on a map so we would remember where to go to see them again.
Our family thoroughly enjoyed these country visits, and as the kids got older their friends would ask if they could go on a "Deer Run" with us. We nearly went broke shelling out a quarter each time they saw a deer, and it was always a big deal for them to get a "buck" for a buck! Pretty soon we had to invest in binoculars for everyone, and guide books about mammals, reptiles and birds so they could identify each creature by themselves!
We spent many of our trips watching mother foxes and their pups romping and playing with each other . . . jack rabbits racing and leaping over each other again and again . . . and of course, who can forget counting over 100 painted turtles sunning themselves on the logs and rocks at "Ducky Ditch!"
Since we visited specific places over and over, the kids decided to rename a lot of the country roads we traveled. These places have all become near and dear to our family over time, and now we will share them with you.
The story behind the cache -
One day, while out on a "deer-run" with our kids, we were surprised by a young fox just standing in the middle of the road! We pulled over, and for the next half hour we were entertained by this young fox, as it chased butterflies and romped in the long grass. Our kids thoroughly enjoyed this special sight, and we returned many times to watch not one, but two young foxes play and wrestle with each other.
For safety reasons, park on the up-slope of the hill (south side). There is a little room to pull off the road here.
