Cuevas dels Hams - the "hook caves"

Die Cuevas dels Hams, die „Angelhakenhöhlen“ sind ein Tropfsteinhöhlensystem an der Ostküste der spanischen Baleareninsel Mallorca.
Die Höhlen befinden sich im Gemeindegebiet von Manacor, etwa einen Kilometer westlich des Ortes Porto Cristo. Wie die ebenfalls bei Porto Cristo gelegenen Coves del Drac („Drachenhöhlen“) sind die Coves dels Hams eine bekannte Touristenattraktion der Insel.
Die Coves dels Hams wurden am 2. März 1905 von Pedro Caldentey entdeckt.
Das an der Straße nach Manacor gelegene verästelte Höhlensystem besitzt, wie die Coves del Drac, einen unterirdischen See, der aber weniger ausgedehnt ist.
Den ungewöhnlich, baumartig gewachsenen Formen der Stalaktiten und Stalagmiten verdanken die Höhlen ihren Namen.
Hams ist ein mallorquinisches Wort für Angelhaken bzw. Harpunen.
Die Höhlen sind ganzjährig geöffnet, außer am 25. Dezember und 1. Januar,
tägliche Öffnungszeit von 10°° bis 16°° Uhr!
Der Vorhof der Höhlen kann ohne Eintritt besichtigt werden.

The Cuevas dels Hams, the "hook caves" are a Limestone cave system located at the east coast of the Spanish Balearic Island Mallorca. The caves are located in the municipality of Manacor, about a kilometer west of the resort of Porto Cristo.
Also located in Porto Cristo are the Coves del Drac ("Dragon's Cave") and the Coves dels Hams, both are famous tourist attractions of the island.
The Coves dels Hams were discovered on March, 2nd 1905 by Pedro Caldentey.
Located on the road to Manacor is the branched cave system, like the Coves del Drac, a subterranean lake, but less huge.
The unusual, tree-like shapes of stalactites and stalagmite caves owe their name.
Ham is a Majorcan word for hook or Harpoons.
The caves are open all year, except 25. December and 1. January,
daily from 10°° to 16°°!
The forecourt of the caves can be visited without charge.
