Starting from the Diosilla’s parking overhanging the homonym waterfall, take the path below the road that goes inside the gorge carved by the Bicione’s river. After passing a series of wooden bridges, you reach to a sulfur spring. In this area you can see various sulfur mines in particular the Indian disused mine that overlooking river.
La Riserva Naturale Monterano, istituita nel 1988, tutela uno degli angoli più rappresentativi ed intatti della Tuscia Romana, tra i Monti della Tolfa e i Monti Sabatini, tutelati da un’altra area protetta.
La Riserva Naturale, oggi meta di migliaia di visitatori provenienti da tutta Italia e dall’Europa (attratti dai suoi paesaggi naturali e dalle rovine dell’antica Monterano in cui sono stati ambientati decine di film), dopo un ampliamento dei suoi confini nel 1993, copre oggi poco più di 1.000 ettari di terreno, che custodiscono una grande varietà di ambienti ed una esuberante biodiversità.
Boschi collinari, forre vulcaniche con vegetazione tipica e felci rarissime, prato-pascoli con la loro tipica flora e fauna; il tutto attraversato da un corso d’acqua, il Fiume Mignone, incluso nei Siti di Interesse Comunitario che costituiscono patrimonio dell’intera Unione Europea nell’ambito della Rete Natura 2000.
Di grande interesse storico-archeologico, ma anche fonte di continue suggestioni panoramiche, la città “morta” di Monterano, con il suo palazzo ducale, l’acquedotto su ardite arcate, la splendida fontana berniniana del leone, il Convento di S. Bonaventura e il tessuto di edifici minori che spesso affondano le loro radici su antiche preesistenze etrusche. Oggi questo ricco patrimonio culturale, grazie alla presenza dell’area protetta, è oggetto di accurati restauri conservativi che contrastano l’incessante opera demolitrice del tempo.
Visitare la Riserva Naturale Monterano significa immergersi in un viaggio nel tempo: tempo dell’uomo con le sue vicende antiche di oltre 3.000 anni, ma anche i tempi molto più lunghi della Natura, che ha modellato questo paesaggio straordinario. Una visita che va fatta prendendosi il tempo dovuto, con calma, soffermandosi sugli spettacolari paesaggi ma anche su piccoli particolari: il volo di una libellula sull’acqua, il gorgogliare di una polla di acqua sulfurea nascosta nella vegetazione, il passaggio furtivo di un picchio o la ricerca, osservando il cielo soprattutto dopo il levarsi del vento, dei grandi rapaci in volo.
Prendetevi anche un momento per uno scambio di impressioni con uno dei tanti anziani di Canale che saranno ben lieti di rievocare fatti e vicende svoltesi in quel territorio a cui sentono, in modo così forte, di appartenere.
Set up in 1988, the Monterano Nature Reserve protects one of the most representative and unspoilt areas of the "Tuscia Romana" between the Tolfa and Sabatini mountains (covered by another protected area).
After its borders were extended in 1993, the Reserve (today visited by thousands of people from all over Italy and Europe, attracted by its natural scenic beauty and the ruins of old Monterano, location for dozens of films) now covers just over 10.8 km² (4 sq miles) with a great variety of habitats and an abundant biodiversity.
Wooded hills, volcanic gorges with typical vegetation and rare ferns, meadows and pastures with their typical plants and animals, crossed by a river, the Mignone, designated as one of the Sites of Community Importance representing the natural heritage of the entire European Union as part of the Nature 2000 Network.
The "dead" city of Monterano with its stately mansion, aqueduct soaring on audacious arches, splendid lion fountain by Bernini, San Bonaventura monastery and other more humble dwellings often built on earlier Etruscan remains is not just of great historical and archaeological interest, but also highly evocative. Thanks to the Reserve, this extraordinarily rich cultural heritage is currently undergoing conservative restoration to combat the inexorable degradation of time.
A visit to the Monterano Nature Reserve is a journey back in time… the time of man and more than 3,000 years of his history, but also a much older time, the time of nature which has shaped this extraordinary landscape. A visit not to be rushed, but savoured slowly and calmly, pausing not just to admire the spectacular scenery, but also the small details… a dragonfly darting over the water, a gurgling pool of milky sulphurous water hidden in the vegetation, the furtive movements of a woodpecker or, especially if you look up at the sky after the wind has got up, the sweeping flight of majestic birds of prey.
And take time to chat to some of the elderly inhabitants of Canale Monterano who will be delighted to talk of the past of this land they feel so much part of.
