[LAT] Turaidas viduslaiku pils galvenais tronis (bergfrids) buvets 13. gadsimta. Tornis savulaik kalpojis par pils aizstavju pedejo patverumu – neatkarigu nocietinajumu.
[ENG] The Main Tower (Berfried) of Turaida medieval castle was built in the 13th century. In former times the Tower served as a last shelter – independent fortification for defenders of the castle.
[LAT] Tornim ir pieci stavi. Sienu biezums vairak apdraudetaja ziemelu puse sasniedz 3,7 m, dienvidu puse - aptuveni 2,9 m. Torna augstums lidz jumta smailei – 38,25 cm. Senak ieeja, uz kuru veda koka kapnes, atradusies 9,5 m augstuma.
20. gadsimta 50. gados veikta arheologiska izpete un restaureta torna augšdala. Uzkapjot torni, apmekletajs noklust apmeram 100 m virs juras limena.
Galvenais tornis atrodas Turaidas muzejrezervata teritorija un ir Turaidas viduslaiku pils kompleksa dala. Turaidas pils buvnieciba sakta 1214.gada nopostitas libiešu koka pils vieta. Lidz 16.gadsimta vidum ta paplašinata un bijusi nozimiga Rigas arhibiskapa nocietinajums. Par Turaidas pili zobenus krustojuši gan polu, gan zviedru, gan krievu karaspeki. Pils ka cietoksnis pastaveja lidz 1776. gada postošajam ugunsgrekam. Tas restauracija sakta pagajuša gadsimta 50. gados. Turaidas pils ir viena no arheologiski visvairak petitajiem viduslaiku pieminekliem Baltijas valstis. Restauretajas ekas apskatami interjeri un ekspozicijas par pils buvniecibu, arhitekturu un notikumiem Turaidas pilsnovada Latvijas un Eiropas vestures konteksta.
[ENG] The Tower has five floors. Thickness of walls on the more endangered side reaches 3.7 metres, on the southern side – approximately 2.9 metres. The hight of the Tower with the spire – 38.25 metres. Formerly wooden stairs led to the entrance at the level of 9.5 metres.
In the 50s of the 20th century there was carried out archaeological investigation and restored the upper part of the Tower. Climbing up the Tower, the visitor is about 100 metres above see level.
The Main Tower is situated in the territory of Turaida Museum Reserve and it is one of historical buildings in the complex of Turaida medieval castle. Building of Turaida castle was started in 1214, on the site of the destroyed wooden stronghold of Livs. The extention of the castle continued up to the middle of the 16th century and it was a significant fortification of Archbishop of Riga. The swords for Turaida castle have been crossed by Polish, Swedish and Russian troops. The castle as a fortress exhisted until the devasting fire of 1776. Its restoration was started in the 50-s of the 20th century. Turaida castle is one of the most investigated medieval castles in the Baltic States. In the restored buildings you can acquaint yourselves with the interior and exhibitions about castle building, architecture and events in Turaida castle district in the context of Latvian and European history.
