Il centro commerciale nasce secondo criteri che prevedono un progetto ed in seguito una gestione unitaria. È solitamente gestito da una società a cui le diverse imprese commerciali, che mantengono una propria autonomia, hanno dato in gestione le strutture e le politiche commerciali e promozionali comuni. Questi centri sorgono allo scopo di concentrare in un unico spazio un considerevole numero di attività commerciali, così da offrire al consumatore un'ampia gamma di beni e servizi a cui accedere senza compiere lunghi spostamenti.
I centri commerciali, così come vengono abitualmente intesi al giorno d'oggi, nascono per essere a misura di automobilista e si collocano solitamente in aree caratterizzate da elevata accessibilità veicolare e trasportistica (quasi sempre nelle periferie delle città). Questo modello è inizialmente sorto negli Stati Uniti, dove per la prima volta si è creato lo scenario urbanistico e sociale tale da consentire/richiedere una simile soluzione, per poi diffondersi anche in altre parti del mondo. Le automobili dei clienti del centro commerciale trovano posto in ampi parcheggi esterni, spesso coperti (anche su più piani) che costituiscono parte integrante del centro.
State attenti a numerosi muggles nella zona ed al mimetismo, non fatevi vedere.

In most of the world the term shopping centre is used, especially in Europe and Australasia; however shopping mall is also used, predominantly in North America. Shopping precinct and shopping arcade are also used. In North America, the term shopping mall is usually applied to enclosed retail structures (and may be abbreviated to simply mall) while shopping centerusually refers to open-air retail complexes, both usually have large parking lots, face major traffic arterials and have few pedestrian connections to surrounding neighborhoods.
Malls in Ireland are usually referred to as "shopping centres" and are typically very small and placed in the centre of town. They average about twenty years in age – the oldest, Stillorgan shopping centre, was built in 1966 – and include a mix of local shops and chain stores. These malls do not have shops found in the high street or modern shopping centres.
Shopping centres in the United Kingdom can be referred to as "shopping centres", "shopping precincts", or "town centres". The standard British pronunciation of the word "mall" is as in "The Mall, London" – the tree-lined avenue leading to Buckingham Palace, London and also like "pal" (friend).
In Hong Kong, the term "shopping centre" is the most frequently used, and the name of a shopping centre in Hong Kong usually contains the word "centre" or "plaza".
Watch out for the many muggles in the area and to the camouflage, don't let them see you. Don't forget to bring a pen wih you to sign the logbook.
