Alvor é uma vila do concelho de Portimão com aproximadamente 15,25 km² de área que se situa junto à foz do rio Alvor (classificado na rede Natura 2000) e é muito conhecida pelas suas praias.
A descoberta, sobre a colina de Vila Velha, que domina a Ria de Alvor, de um povoado neolítico com vestígios de ocupação romana posterior comprova a longa história desta povoação.
Há quem defenda que foi fundada pelos Árabes por volta do ano de 716. O nome desta vila significa fortaleza, castelo, derivando do árabe al-burdj.Durante o domínio árabe, Alvor foi um porto próspero. As muralhas que a defendiam foram palco de violentos combates quando o exército português, comandado p
elo rei D. Sancho I, com a ajuda de cruzados, a conquistou em 1189. Recuperada pelos muçulmanos em 1191, só aquando das campanhas de conquista do Algarve, em 1250, voltou ao domínio cristão.Reconstruídas as muralhas em 1300, promovida a vila por D. Manuel I, logo após o falecimento de D. João II, Alvor inseriu-se no período de prosperidade dos sécs. XV e XVI. O terramoto de 1755, porém, provocou grandes estragos e a antiga vila nunca mais recuperou o seu esplendor passado, perdendo o estatuto de vila com Marquês de Pombal só o recuperando definitivamente em 1988.
Aqui faleceu, em 25 de Outubro de 1495, el-rei de Portugal D. João II.
Actualmente o Castelo de Alvor é considerado um expressivo monumento militar no Algarve. Nos finais do século XX, o castelo foi considerado como Imóvel de Interesse Público tendo sido transformado num jardim infantil. Da fortaleza restam apenas dois troços da muralha com casas adossadas.
A Igreja Matriz de Alvor é uma edificação do séc. XVI, reconstruída no séc. XVIII. O pórtico principal profusamente lavrado - um dos mais belos do Algarve - e o pórtico lateral são em estilo manuelino.
Os morabitos de São João e de São Pedro são construções de forma cúbica, com cúpula esférica de influência árabe, estas ermidas evocam os morabitos muçulmanos usados como locais de enterramento de ascetas. Hoje em dia estão adaptados a capelas. Para além destes 2 morabitos existe mais um em Alvor anexo à Igreja Matriz que hoje em dia é a sacristia.
A Igreja da Misericórdia é uma pequena igreja que se encontra no centro da vila. Foi restaurada e hoje em dia encontra-se aberta ao público. Tem um interior acolhedor e interessante, onde se destacam as sete bandeiras. Adjacente a esta igreja encontra-se um museu onde estão representadas várias actividades relacionadas com a terra e o mar. Existe também neste museu um vasto leque de peças que contam toda a história da vila. Está aberto ao público mas apenas no Verão e à noite.
Devido à importância da pesca na história desta vila foi também inaugurado em 2000 um monumento de homenagem ao pescador e que se encontra junto do edifício da antiga lota onde se fazia a venda do peixe. Hoje em dia esse edifício foi restaurado e está perfeitamente integrado na zona ribeirinha.
Hoje em dia, paralelamente com a pesca de cariz artesanal, a restauração, o comércio e o turismo são as actividades económicas principais.

Alvor is a village in the municipality of Portimão with approximately 15.25 km² which lies near the mouth of the Alvor River (classified under Natura 2000) and very well known for its beaches.
The discovery of a Neolithic hamlet with signs of late roman occupation on the Vila Velha hill that dominates Alvor Ria, proves the long history of this village.
It’s common belief that Alvor was founded by the Arabs around 716. The name of this village means fortress, castle, deriving from the Arab Al-burdj.
During the Arab dominion, Alvor was a prosperous port. The walls that defended the village were the place of violent battles when the Portuguese army, commanded by King Sancho I, with the help of Crusaders, conquered it in 1189. Reconquered by the muslims in 1191, the village returned to Christian domain only in the course of the conquest campaigns of the Algarve, in 1250.
After the reconstruction of the walls in 1300 and shortly after King João II death, King Manuel I promoted Alvor to town. Henceforth Alvor entered the period of prosperity of the 15th and 16th centuries. The earthquake of 1755, however, caused major damage and the old village never regained its past splendour, losing the category of town with the Marquês de Pombal. It recovered this status definitely in 1988.
D. João II, king of Portugal, died here on the 25th October 1495.
Nowadays, along with artisanal fishing, restaurants, commerce and tourism are its main economic activities.
Presently, Alvor Castle is considered a significant military monument in the Algarve. At the end of the 20th century, the castle was considered a monument of public interest and has been transformed into a playground. From the fortress, only two sections of the wall remain, with houses leaned on them.
Igreja Matriz de Alvor (Mother Church of Alvor) - Building of the 16th century, rebuilt in the 18th century. The main portico profusely carved - one of the most beautiful of the Algarve - and the lateral portico are Manueline style.
Morabitos de São João e de São Pedro (St. John and St. Peter Morabits) - Cubic shaped buildings with spherical dome of Arabic influence, these chapels evoke the Muslims morabits used as burial places of ascetics. Apart from these two morabits in Alvor there is one more annexed to Igreja Matriz (Mother Church) that nowadays is the sacristy.
Igreja da Misericórdia (Church of Mercy) – Small church in the town centre. It has been restored and today it’s opened to the public. With the seven flags in spotlight, its interior is cosy and interesting. Next to this church there is a Museum where several activities related to land and sea are in exhibition. There is also a wide range of objects that tell the whole story of the village. The Museum is open to the public but only in summer and in the evening.
Due to the importance of fishing in the history of this village, a memorial tribute to fisherman was inaugurated in 2000, next to the building of the former fish auction where the sale of fish used to take place. This building has been restored and it’s perfectly integrated in the riverbank area.
