On 4 November 2001 the Central Coast Geocachers of California had their "Santa Cruz Geocache Turkey Bash" (Fall/Winter Picnic) at Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park near Santa Cruz, CA. This cache was made at the picnic. Iron Chef provided the .50mm ammo box, the nifty-keno geocaching sticker that went on the side, the "please read me" note, and the log book.Everyone who attended the picnic put something inside the box :~) needless to say since the turnout was very good, the box is very full and it may take some playing with to get everything to fit (especially the turkey baster). Also included in the cache is a disposable camera with a flash, so make sure to take a picture of yourself when you find the cache!
There are many trails that lead to the area where the cache is at (both official ones and unofficial ones). There are places close to the cache where you can park for free (CA-9). There is no need to park in a residential area and cross private property.
Be advised that you will most likely lose your GPS sat lock while walking to the site from your parking spot or trail head. The tall Redwoods, although beautiful, aren't good for GPS satellite signals. Satellite reception at the site is good though as I was able to track 6 sats and get a good 3D EPE.
As always, please make sure to rehide the cache as well if not better than you found it! The area is relatively heavily traversed and this is the only way that this cache will remain active.
Cache is safe for adults and children. Cache is night-time accessible (depending on where you start)! Parking is free, depending on where you park (if you park in the CA SP lot then it is 3 bucks). Mountain bikes and dogs are NOT allowed on the trails in this area. 3D EPE of 18 feet with Garmin GPS V. No turkeys were harmed in the making of this cache. ;~) ICG waypoint ID G-NX-033.This cache planted by Iron Chef for the Central Coast Geocachers of California. Enjoy.
