HORTUS CONCLUSUS

La regola di San Benedetto raccomandava la presenza di acqua e di
un Hortus all'interno del monastero ed ancora oggi i vari
insediamenti monastici conservano gli orti, i giardini o comunque
traccia di essi. Questo spazio verde veniva chiamato Hortus
conclusus e può essere considerato una specie di
“giardino-paradiso”, dove il monaco, in uno spazio
chiuso da un muro di cinta, ricreava - attraverso un'accurata
scelta dei fiori, degli alberi da frutto, delle piante officinali -
la perfezione dell'Eden. L'Hortus conclusus è un giardino segreto
che offre riparo e preclude dal male; venivano coltivate la rosa
che è il simbolo dell'amore, il giglio simbolo della purezza e
della povertà e altri fiori i cui simboli sono densi di
significato. Anche gli alberi erano scelti secondo criteri precisi:
la palma ad esempio rappresenta la giustizia, il fico è metafora
della dolcezza e della fertilità, l'olivo è il segno della
misericordia e della pace. Tutti i fiori, le piante, i frutti, le
erbe officinali aiutavano a circoscrivere uno spazio di intimità
trascendente.
L'hortus conclusus rappresentava un frammento di natura modellato
dall'uomo dove ogni elemento aveva un senso, anche i colori ed i
profumi. Nella parte centrale dell'hortus c'era sempre un albero o
un pozzo, simboli di vita e di sapienza.

The Rule of St. Benedict urged the presence of water and a Hortus
within the monastery and the various monastic settlements still
retain the orchards, gardens or some trace of them. This green
space was called Hortus conclusus and can be considered a kind of
"paradise garden", where the monk, in a space enclosed by a wall,
recreated - through careful selection of flowers, fruit trees,
plants herbs - the perfection of Eden. The Hortus conclusus is a
secret garden that offers shelter and prevents us from evil; here
are grown the rose that is the symbol of love, the lily symbol of
purity and poverty, and other flowers whose symbols are rich in
meaning. Even the trees were chosen according to specific criteria:
for example, the palm is the justice, the fig is a metaphor for the
sweetness and fertility, the olive tree is a sign of mercy and
peace. All flowers, plants, fruits, herbs helped to circumscribe an
area of intimacy transcendent.
The Hortus conclusus constitutes a fragment of nature shaped by
man, where every item had meaning, even the colors and fragrances.
In the central part of the Hortus there was always a tree or a
well, symbols of life and wisdom.
