Hallstatt Salzberg
In
Salzberg hinein zugraben. Bis dahin nutzte man nur Oberflächensalz
oder salzhaltige Quellen. Im Laufe der Jahrtausende entstand dann
ein Stollensystem von etwa 4000 Metern.

Hallstatt Saltemountain
A shallow sea covered large parts of the country at the end of
the earth antiquity. The climate was warm and drying. In this time
the northern limestone alps with our resounding place lay not as
today north the alpine main comb, but further in the south. In
addition, the alpine main comb was not mountains. In protected
lagoons of the shallow sea the strong evaporation of the sea water
separated salt. In the course of the following millions of years
powerful other rock formations covered the salt and protected it
against dissolution. When approximately hundred million years ago
the mountain world of our alps originated, the salt as well as its
surface layers was folded. In addition it came that the
specifically lighter and vividly well ductile salt was
substantially more mobile opposite the surface layers.
Already around 900 v. Chr. humans began digging into the salt
mountain. Up to then one used only surface salt or saline sources.
In the course of thousands of years then a lug system of
approximately 4000 meters developed.
