Wilhelm Canal (or Klaipeda canal) was hand dug in1865-1873 by the French war prisoners. It directly connects the port of Klaipeda and Minija river (and with Nemunas river through it), thus bypassing the Curonian lagoon. The canal length is 25-27 km, width 28-30 m, average depth 1.7 m.
The canal begins at Lankupiai village where it branches off from the Minija river, then it goes to the north-west through Dreverna village, then eventually reaches Klaipeda. There is a hydro geological reserve.
Canal was expected to be built in the middle of XVIII century, but because of financial difficulties the project was postponed. At that time more and more wood was rafted by Nemunas to Klaipeda, but at windy Vente cape area rafts were often broken, and merchants had significant losses because of that. In order to bypass the Curonian Lagoon it was decided to connect Minija river directly to the port of Klaipeda at Lankupiai village.
Chanel has started construction in 1863, this work lasted about 10 years. Within the channel gateway was constructed to eliminate water level differences (now it’s Lithuanian technical monument). In 1902-1904 banks of the canal were connected by ten light metal bridges. Canal then got the German Kaiser Wilhelm’s name. While making the canal many French prisoners of war died, so there is a monument at the canal mouth built for them.
