Geocache Description:

This bridge carried all highway traffic for 41 years, looking west upstream you can clearly see the twin bridges crossing the river on the freeway standard Karuah Bypass.

In 1952 when the decision was made to re-route the highway to a more inland route between 12 Mile Creek and Purfleet (south of Taree) one of the significant problems was the lack of bridging of the Karuah river. A vehicular ferry had been in operation across the Karuah River for a number of years before the decision to reroute the highway through Karuah was made. Below the rest stop at the southern end of the bridge is what looks like it could have been a ferry landing once upon a time.

On the 14th December 1957 the Karuah River Bridge was officially opened to traffic, however it was another 6 years until other sections of the route between 12 Mile Creek and Buladelah were completed and the bridge was finally used for through traffic. It continued to serve the highway until September 2004 when the freeway standard Karuah bypass was opened to traffic.

Park in the rest stop just off the southern end of the bridge and enjoy a short walk to the bridge to grab the cache. The cache is a magnetic mint tin with a log only, please BYO pen. Be sure to look upstream and see the new twin bridges and traffic moving across them.

Thanks to ozroads (visit link) for some of the info.
