Geocache Description:

St. Nicholas's Church, East Grafton

Grafton Parish Church - 1948

The parish of Grafton was carved out of the ancient parish of Great Bedwyn in 1845. The church of St Nicholas was built in that year on land donated by the marquis of Ailesbury. It was designed by Benjamin Ferrey and funded by public subscription. During its construction the marquis was showing the future incumbent his new church when an overhead arch collapsed, killing the clergyman and narrowly missing the marquis. Inside there is a plaque commemorating the event.
