Geocache Description:

Welcome to Kendal Railway Station!

Kendal Railway Station was opened on 21 September 1846 on a day of great excitement and rejoicing. A public holiday was declared and shops were closed and a flag was hoisted on the Town Hall and Castle. A large crowd had gathered to greet the first train, eight flag bedecked carriages drawn by the new engine, "The Dalemain".

The line from Oxenholme to Windermere was built at a cost of £125,000 and when first opened the station was just a  temporary wooden shelter. By 1860 a grand station masters house was built along with the iron bridge at the east end of the station.

In 1980 the building became a doctors surgery and offices with the station ironically returning to being just a 'shelter' as it was some 134 years earlier.

Interestingly, there is evidence of a station siding at the westerly end of the station indicating that there must have been a terminus for some trains arriving from Windermere or maybe a goods collection/delivery point. There is also evidence of other goods sidings adjacent to the station that are now a car park.

To Find The Cache

Rather than make this a 'regular' cache I decided to add a little fun to the find that will allow you to explore the station in more detail rather than just a 'cache and dash'! Saying this, if you are lucky (or come by train) then the cache could be found within 20 or 30 minutes.

To find this cache you need to gather together a total of eight clues from questions that relate to the railway in some form or another. All of the answers can be found in and around the station itself.

Two of them require a degree of 'train-spotting' skills to get them so depending on the time of day you may have to wait a short while before your answer becomes available to you with only a couple of minutes to deduce your answers!

Getting There

The best way to get to this cache site is by train. However, the coordinates given above relate to the entry point from the main road where you can start your quest on foot.  If you are arriving by car you can drive up the approach road to the station itself where short term parking is available then you must return on foot to the start coordinates in order to successfully gather all your clues.

As with most railway stations these days there is CCTV monitoring. Please remain covert at all times to avoid arousing unnecessary suspicion.

Depending on the train times the eight questions could be answered within five to ten minutes. You will more than likely need to see a train in situe Finding the cache may take a little longer.

The Solution

Now you have gathered together the required numerical data take a seat and work out the coordinates of the cache from this simple formula. The cache is well hidden at an interesting 'Sidetracked' location near to Kendal Railway Station.

54° 20.###     (A + B + C + D Minus 1060 = ###)

002° 44.### (E + F + G + H Plus 287 = ###)

I hope you enjoy your visit to Kendal Railway Station and the 'Sidetracked' location!
