Geocache Description:

Firstly I would like to thank The Sandwell Valley Countryside Management Team for allowing me to place this series of caches. The entire series comprises of 20 caches, hidden in a circular route around Sandwell Valley Country Park. They vary in size from tiny micros to large continers.

The whole series is a total of 9.5 miles long. You could start anywhere along the route as there are various places to park. The paths are easy to follow and are suitable for bikes. Pushchairs will be fine around most of the route but some areas can be very muddy following heavy rain (especially caches 1, 2, 3 & 11).

We hope you enjoy the series and we will look forward to hearing your stories and looking at your photographs.

SOTS HOLE

Sots Hole has over 5 hectares of some of the oldest woodland in Sandwell. The largely wet woodland supports a variety of tree species. A stream flows through the site and a small pool has recently been created.

A surfaced path leads through the Reserve, linking up with other paths leading into Sandwell Valley Country Park and this is close to where the cache is located.

A variety of woodland bird species can be found, and the wet nature of the woodland supports plants such as water horsetail and marsh thistle. Sots Hole looks particularly spectacular in Spring, when much of the drier part of the wood is carpeted with bluebells.

Sot's Hole is one of three Local Nature Reserves in the Country Park and in an effort to protect and restore the reserve, a group of local people joined together in November 2005 and formed the Friends of Sot's Hole.

The entrance is via a kissing gate. Parking is available at the Visitor Car Park, Eaton Valley Primary School, which is just a few metres from the main entrance to Sot's Hole.

If you park at the suggested parking area don' forget to have a look at Hill House in Dagger Lane as you leave the car park. It is an early C16 grade II listed timber framed house. Nelson's mid-shipman lived here and Charles Dickens is reputed to have written Old Curiosity Shop whilst visiting.

This cache consists of a small plastic box containing a log and pencil.
