A short hike on an easy trail. The park is open from 8am-8pm year round. There is an admission fee.
Native mountain laurel and rhododendron are similar looking evergreens that grow in many places on the mountain. An easy way to tell them apart is the leaves. Rhododendron leaves are about the size of your hand from wrist to fingertip. Mt. laurel leaves are shorter. Another interesting fact about rhododendron leaves is that they curl up when the temperature falls below 20 degrees. The colder it gets, the tighter they curl. Bloom times differ also, with laurel flowering near Mother's Day and rhododrendron near Father's Day. If you're here when the laurel blooms, take a close look at the beautiful flower. If you lightly touch the stamens with a pencil tip, they will "pop" at you. This is how the plant distributes pollen to visiting insects. The cache is only 4-5 feet off the trail and is a log only micro, so bring a pen and tweezers.
