A Finnish Air Force F-18 D Hornet crashed in Juupajoki in Finland's Pirkanmaa province on Thursday the 21st of January in 2010. Two pilots ejected before the crash and survived. The crash happened in an uninhabited area. The cause of the crash was not immediately clear.
Initial indications are that the pilots put the plane into a vertical ascent to an altitude of more than 10,000 metres, before cutting off thrust and allowing the plane to fall tail-first towards the ground. The aircraft was then spun through 180 degrees into a precipitous dive. At this point it apparently lost manoeuvrability, and the crew deployed their ejector seats at a height of approximately 4,500 metres after failing to regain control.
The aircraft "Frankenplane" had been recently built at a cost of some 15 million euros using the rear part of the plane that had been damaged in the collision, and the front of a used plane from Canada.

Onnettomuuteen johtanut tapahtumaketju alkoi reilun 10 000 metrin korkeudella, kun kone teki koelento-ohjelman mukaista liikesarjaa. Kone nousi pystysuoraan ylöspäin, jonka jälkeen ohjaaja vähensi tehoja saadakseen Hornetin pyrstöluisuun. Kun kone pyrstöluisun jälkeen alkoi syöksyä kohti maata, se yllättäen menetti ohjattavuutensa. Lentäjien oli poistuttava koneesta heittoistuimien avulla n. 4 500 metrin korkeudessa.
Kaksipaikkainen "Frankenplane" oli juuri rakennettu yhdistämällä onnettomuudessa vaurioituneen suomalaisen Hornetin takaosa Kanadasta tuotuun etuosaan. Muunnostyön kustannukset olivat n. 15 miljoonaa euroa.
Koordinaatit johtavat sinut putoamispaikalle, mutta sinne kätköä ei voinut piilottaa. Siksi se sijaitsee hieman syrjässä.
