Around the end of thousand years B.C., new political group emerged at the center of Korean peninsular, Seoul and the partial forces of Goguryeo moved down to south establishing Baekje. They built Castle Wiryeoi and expanded their force as a state with citadels.
At the end of 5th century in 475, the strategic spot around River Han was taken over by Goguryeo from Baekje, the separate city called Nampyeongyang in the region of Seoul was established.
In the middle of 7th century, three divided nations such as Goguryeo, Baekje and Sinlla had a competition to occupy the region surrounding River Han but Baekje was destroyed by the allied forces of Sinlla and Tang from China in the 7th year of King Muyeol in 660. And as the allied forces of Sinlla and Tang of China also disintegrated Goguryeo in the 8th year of King Munmu in 668, Sinlla incorporated Seoul region to Hansanju (Gwangju) and changed its name as Hanyanggun in the 16th year of King Gyeongdeok belonging to Hanju.
Seoul at the time of Goryeo dynasty including Jung-gu was called as Yangju from 1035 to 1046 and afterward it was called as Namgyeong until being called as Hanyang at the end of 14th century.
It seems that Yangju in those days was under the direct control of government and this stature was thought to be continued till Goryeo dynasty.
Social and economical discrepancy at the end of Goryeo dynasty enabled the foundation of new dynasty to be established in 1392 and King Taejo, the founder of Joseon dynasty set the new capital in Hanyang in 1392 He also selected and planned the location of the ancestral shrine of the royal family, the guardian deities of the State, the palaces, the government offices, the military camps and the roads and started the project establishing new capital in full scale.
In December 1395, King took a seat at the new palace and Hanseongbu (now Seoul) was equipped with appearance and contents as the capital of a nation.
Jung-gu is the center of the capital Seoul now and the establishment of Seoul Metropolis was announced by the Provision No. 106 of August 14 Seoul City’s Charter in September 18, 1946 And on the 28th of September of the same year, Seoul Metropolis was born officially and it was divided by eight Gus such as Jongro-gu, Jung-gu, Mapo-gu, Seodaemun-gu, Dongdaemun-gu, Yongsan-gu, and Yeongdeungpo-gu Under the presidential decree No. 7816 on September 23, 1975, the area of Jung-gu was expanded greatly on October 1, 1975 and due to administrative enlargement, the area of Jung-gu was increased from 6.34? to 9.99? by 58% compared to that in the past.
Viewing economical condition of Seoul on the basis of 1993, there are 155 groups of the enterprises and among them 46 are located in the jurisdiction of Jung-gu while there are 26 in Gangnam and Seocho, 21 in Jongro, 18 in Yeongdeungpo showing predominance of Jung-gu Moreover, most of the leading enterprises are stationed in Jung-gu and it is not an exaggeration to say that Jung-gu is responsible for Korean economy.
Also, 40% of the institutions related to finance, trade and government is congested in Jung-gu and especially, 80% of the headquarters of prestigious banks including the Bank of Korea, and Korea Exchange Bank are stationed near Namdaemun street in Jung-gu.
representing 10 first class hotels in Korea and 20 tourist hotels including the second and the third class hotel are in Jung-gu and the financial institutions and the department stores are on the second and the third street of Namdaemun street. Famous department stores such as Shinsegae and Lotte are here also, and modern merchandising town with skyscrapers including Geopyeong and Dusan has been formed on Euljiro 6th street making this place famous domestically as well as internationally.
