Southern Cross Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Ngaambul: As there's been no cache to find or log to sign for months, I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements. If you wish to repair/replace the cache sometime in the future, just contact us (by email), and assuming it meets the guidelines, we'll be happy to unarchive it.

Geocache Description:

What is the Southern Cross?

You may think of the constellation, visible in the southern hemisphere, used for navigation and also included on the Australian flag. It also appears on the Eureka flag, used in the 1854 goldminer's revolt.

Or you may think of the aeroplane named Southern Cross, in which Sir Charles Kingsford Smith conducted the first trans-pacific flight from the United States to Australia.

There is also a Southern Cross University, with campuses in Lismore, Coffs Harbour, the Gold Coast, Tweed Heads and Sydney.

There is a main thoroughfare in the north of Canberra, named Southern Cross drive.

And now, there is a cache. Close to Southern Cross drive in north Canberra, it is also named Southern Cross. If you try for this at night, perhaps you'll be able to see the constellation as well!

I recommend that you park at S35 13.271 E149 00.822 and walk across the oval.

Please BYO pen, and be careful of muggles. The cache is located near an intersection, and there seems to be no safe time, day or night, to try for this one. It was almost muggled just setting it up!

Happy caching!
