A "leftover" block from the last ice age that has been cracked by the brute force of freezing water. It's just a matter of time....
"Frost wedging" is called a process where liquid water penetrates small fissures in rocks. Next winter when the water freezes it expands (the volume of ice is larger than the same weight liquid water) and puts mechanical stress on the rock. This process, repeated over many thawing-freezing cycles (also between warm days and cold nights) will let the fissure grow and can let finally crack the rock in pieces. Even big rocks like this one here can be broken down, it's just a matter of loooooots of time!
