Geologie des Kellerwaldes
Diabas

Geology of the Kellerwald
Diabas
The today's Kellerwald area was covered at the beginning of the
Carbonifeous with an ocean.
Enormous rock movements broke at that time gaps and columns into
the earth's crust.
Glow-liquid magma cleared the way to the earth's surface and
solidified
under the ocean surface to pulvinated diabase blankets -
„pillows “.
Argillite (hardened mud)
Creeks and rivers carried enormous quantities of demolition debris
into the Devonian- and Carboniferous ocean.
The fine argillite were rinsed with the currents far into the sea
and settled in coastalfar, deep sea regions.
In the course of millions of years it solidified itself to
argillite.
Argillite is thus a fine-grained and besides hard sedimentary
rock.
On the layer surfaces often petrified castings of shells,
animal- and plant leftovers can be recognized as fossils.
Graywacke
Sand and gravel were deposited, sedimented, in the Devonian- and
Carbonifeous sea in shallow coastal ranges.
This glut material solidified itself with the time to a new rock,
the sedimentary rock graywacke.
In contrast to other sandstones it is compound only to the half
from quartz grains,
the remainder consists of other mineral grains and rock
fragments.
The grey color, from there the name graywacke, resulted from
organic admixtures.
Conglomerate rock (natural concrete)
Our creeks and rivers cleared away cut up rock by decomposition
perpetual.
In the case of slow transport the rock debris is back and forth
rolled, rounded and polished.
Over the rivers at that time, graveled and crushed stones
of the old mainland mass arrived into the sea and set off.
In the case of millions of years the rough, rounded sediments
cemented themselves among themselves to a conglomerate rock.
“Eder”gravel
With the earth age of the Quaternary began the ice age, which last
ended before 10,000 years.
During the cold times Hesse was predominantly ice-free and
resembled a cooling steppe.
Rivers carried enormous quantities of mud and rubble down into the
valley,
filled up the dips or transported the rock material into the
sea.
In the case of transport the stones were rounded and
polished.
Today matured gravel and sand are reduced in individual places of
the Eder.
