Lyng mill was built as a flour mill in the early 1400s but
over the centuries it was operated as both a flour mill and a paper
mill. When the mill was rebuilt after being badly damaged during
the riots of 1832, it was configured to run as both a flour mill
and a paper mill using two cast iron wheels.
As operated prior to closure c.1868:
The flour mill was powered by a 6ft 9ins wide, 14ft 5ins diameter
cast iron wheel. The cast iron pit wheel (described as new in 1868)
was 9ft diameter, the wallower was also cast iron, the great spur
wheel was 9ft 6ins in diameter and the crown wheel was 5ft 6ins
diameter.
