Neahkahnie Trailhead West
Update, December 2022: The trail is now open after an extended closure due to storm damage. It's in great condition!
This cache is great for a quick drive-by since it is only a few feet from the highway. Parking is on the west side of US 101 in a large gravel pullout. However, if you are interested in some terrific hiking as well, read on!
The cache marks the beginning of a wonderful hike to the summit of Neahkahnie Mountain. There are a bunch of caches on the way, and then one at the summit. Update 8-14 - There is now a cache on the "other" summit!
You can do the hike as an out-and-back. A more ambitious hike involves a loop from here to the summit, then down to another trailhead on the east side of the mountain, and finally back along the highway to the start. Hiking the entire loop is approximately 5.5 miles, and will net you as many as 18 caches.
Note that the last 1.4 miles of the loop hike will be on US 101 as you return to the start of the loop. However, this is one of the most incredible and scenic sections of the entire Oregon Coast. Just be careful of traffic. Hint: You can walk behind the guard rail for the last few hundred feet in order to keep away from traffic.
Here are links to the caches that will guide you on the full loop hike. The caches are in order from the west trailhead. Due to switchbacks, the next closest cache may not be the next along the trail!
