1878 begann man mit dem Bau der Eisenbahnbrücke. Nicht nur die
Überquerung des Rheins bereiteten Schwierigkeiten, auch der Zugang
zur Brücke benötigte bereits Landbögen und Dammbauten. Die gesamte
Brücke hatte schließlich eine Länge von 312 m. Den Bau der
Horchheimer Rheineisenbahnbrücke und der ein Jahr zuvor fertig
gestellten Gülser Moseleisenbahnbrücke muss man in einem
Zusammenhang sehen. Beide dienten der rückwärtigen Verbindung der
Moseleisenbahn Metz-Berlin. Es war anfangs möglich, die Brücke in
Fahrpausen dem Fußgängerverkehr freizugeben. Schon 1901 / 1902
fuhren 130 Züge täglich und ein Umbau und eine Verstärkung der
Brücke wurden notwendig. In dieser Zeit wurden auch die
Fußgängerstege angebracht. Damals entstand auf Horchheimer Seite
der Tunnel, der unmittelbar die Zufahrt zur rechtsrheinischen
Eisenbahnlinie ermöglichte. Ein weiterer Umbau erfolgte 1933 /
1934.
Die Horchheimer Eisenbahnbrücke wurde zum Ende des Zweiten
Weltkriegs fast völlig zerstört. Am 16. Juni 1947 konnte sie
eingleisig wieder befahren werden. Im Jahre 1961 erhielt die Brücke
ihre heutige Gestalt. Die neben der provisorischen Brücke
konstruierte moderne Balkenbrücke wurde an die Stelle der alten
Gitterkonstruktion verbracht. Die Brücke hat am Mittelpfeiler eine
Breite von 12,4 m und eine Konstruktionshöhe von 5,5 m. Von 1969
bis 1975 entstand südlich der Horchheimer Eisenbahnbrücke, nur 36 m
entfernt gelegen, die Südbrücke.
Seit vielen Jahren ist der flussabwärts gelegene Fußgängersteg
gesperrt, da er irreparabel geschädigt ist. Ab 2004 wurde dann auch
der flussaufwärts gelegene Fußgängersteg wegen Baufälligkeit
gesperrt und nach der Sanierung des Teiles am linksrheinischen
Brückenkopf ab 16. Mai 2007 wieder freigegeben. Ende Januar 2009
musste auch der Fuß- und Radweg des rechtsrheinischen Brückenkopfes
auf der Horchheimer Seite wegen gravierender Betonschäden gesperrt
werden. Am 29. Juni 2009 wurde die Brücke wieder für den Fuß- und
Fahrradverkehr freigegeben, nachdem die Stabilität des Weges durch
eine zusätzliche Stahlkonstruktion am rechtsrheinischen Brückenkopf
gewährleistet werden konnte.

Die Gleise sind von Fussgängerweg durch ein Geländer
abgetrennt. Die Gleise dürfen und müssen nicht betreten werden. Das
Geländer muss für den Cache nicht erklettert werden.
