FRANCAIS : LE MONUMENT DU CENTENAIRE. Ce monument de pierre et de fonte, œuvre de Félix Charpentier fut élevé pour commémorer le rattachement, en 1791 des « états d'Avignon et du Comtat Venaissin » à la France. Le « Vaucluse » devint alors le 87 ème département Français.
L’homme sculpté (à gauche sur la photo) représenterait Pourquery de Boisserin, maire d'Avignon en 1891 , vêtu de sa seule moustache.
Anecdote (à vérifier) : Des opposants politiques de l’époque seraient venus nuitamment avec burin et marteau réduire les « attributs virils» du maire.
Ce monument , s'élevait à l’origine Place de l'Horloge* et fut déplacé aux Allées de l'Oulle en 1974.

ENGLISH : THE CENTENNIAL'S MONUMENT. This monument of stone and iron, work of Felix Charpentier was erected to commemorate the unification, in 1791 of "states of Avignon and Comtat Venaissin" to France. The "Vaucluse" became then the 87th French department.
The man carved (left on picture) should represent Pourquery Boisserin, Mayor of Avignon in 1891, wearing only his moustache.
Anecdote (to be verified): Some political opponents of this time would come there at night with chisel and hammer to cut "manly attributes" of the mayor.
This monument was originally situated Place de l'Horloge* and was moved to Allées de l’Oulle in 1974.
