Geocache Description:

Church Micro 908...Hastingleigh

Yet another of the excellent Church Micro series. The Church of St.Mary the Virgin at Hastingleigh near Wye. Ample Car Parking can be found at N51 09.658 E001 00.222 .

The Church is ouside of the village at the bottom of the Valley and has ample car parking. The Cache is outside of the church grounds just off a Byway. The Village of Hastingleigh is mentioned three times in the Domesday book but the church is not mentioned although it was present in some form at the time. The church is mostly Norman and early English in design.

The Tower is made of flint and was built in the 13th century but the top of the tower is much later. The Church is mostly open so take a look inside as you enter take a look at some of the olde worlde graffiti that has been scratched into the stone door frame. There are a few brass memoroals in the floor as well as a few grave covering stones. On the wall on the right of the church is part of some early (15th century) wall paintings and one opposite on the left.

The gate that leads to the church was made by local craftsmen from trees that fell in the 1987 storm.

If anybody would like to expand the Church Micro series please do, we would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names,
to avoid duplication.
Goodluck and happy caching!-M3HXE.
