The Gauja — Daugava canal was planned already in 1662, but was actually built only from 1899 to 1903.

Ta uzdevums bija saistit Gaujas udenscelu ar Daugavu, respektivi Rigu, pa ramiem iekšzemes udeniem, neizejot jura un apejot Gaujas smilšaino grivu. Kanals tika izmantots lidz pat XX.gs. sešdesmitajiem gadiem, no Vidzemes pa Gauju atpludinato koku pludinašanai uz Rigu. Kanala kopejais garums ir 22.3 km, posms no Gaujas lidz Mazajam Baltezeram ir 3.1 km ar divam služam un 2.5 m kritumu. Diemžel lidz musdienam no služam ir saglabajušies vairs tikai muri un služu vieta pie Gaujas ir ierikots primitivs aizvars (tur jus, starp citu, ari varat atrast slepni GC1BDXB Daugava and Gauja canal LOCK).
It's purpose was to connect the Gauja waterway to Daugava river, respectively to connect Gauja to Riga, with peaceful inland waters, to avoid going out to sea, and to avoid the sandy section of Gauja. This canal was used up to sixties of the 20th century to ferry tree logs from Vidzeme to Riga. The total lenght of this canal is 22.3Km, the section from Gauja to the Small Baltezers lake is 3.1km with two lock gates and 2.5m height difference. Unfortunately, nowadays the lock gate is gone, and only walls and a primitive weir at the Gauja river are remaining (there you can find another cache GC1BDXB Daugava and Gauja canal LOCK).
