Number 901 in the 'Church Micro' series. The Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin, Battle, East Sussex. There is parking available for church users, adjacent to the church. Alternatively there is limited free parking in Battle town centre or a couple of pay and display car parks. The cache is located on a public footpath. You don't have to enter the churchyard to access the cache.
This is one of 5 caches by us around the historic town of Battle in East Sussex. All of which can be done individually or as a longer circular walk through both town & countryside, taking in all the sights of this historic town along the way. St Mary the Virgin Church in Battle, East Sussex was built on the edge of the battlefield by the monks for the people of Battel. It dates from 1115, founded by Abbot Ralph as the place of Christian worship for the townsfolk of Battel. It was assumed that it was a very small & primitive building consisting of a plain nave about 40 feet long,, without aisles & with a little chancel some 17 feet in length. From the middle of the 12th century the monks began to enlarge the church. A tower was built where St Catherine's chapel now stands, narrow lean-to-extensions to the north & south sides of the nave formed aisles. The church has been further developed over the years & is well worth a visit. If continuing the series, you can go towards the town and past the entrance to Battle Abbey. Taking you to the start of 1066 Trail 2. The cache is a 35mm micro containing a logbook, pencil and certificates for the first 3 to find. Please ensure that cache is fastened securely & replaced carefully. This is a popular area & stealth may be required.
