Geocache Description:

A short stroll from a seaside carpark through a disused quarry

Ladies Bay (Grahams Sand to the cartographer) is a cove to the South of Trow rocks. It is situated in a disused limestone quarry which extended from Trow to Frechmans Bay to the South. The quarry, when it was abandoned was over 20ft. deeper than the level seen today. At that time the quarry bottom was very wet in places,as it was much closer to sea level, and was the home to numerous newts and frogs.
The local Council used the area as a landfill, to accomodate rubble generated by a slum clearance programme (Try doing this to a colony of newts today!),and on completion it was grassed over and eventually became part of the public Leas which is now looked after by The National Trust.
Recently concerns arose as to the presence of hazardous materials in the landfill and a series of test bores were drilled in the area.
The frontage of Ladies Bay ad a second area to the South were being eroded by the sea, exposing the landfill material, so the affected areas have been graded and revetted with Norwegian blue granite. This was barged in and dumped on the beach at high tide, before being placed as the continuous
angled band that you can see today, hopefully preventing further erosion.
The cache is a plastic screw top tub and contains a Whoopy whistle,Nigerian penny coin (not legal tender),bookmark and key ring.
