Geocache Description:

Think of this as The Su Doku Challenge, Part 5.
If you haven't yet mastered Su Doku, this is probably too rich for you.

!CONGRATULATIONS! First to find on September 13 2009 by Garyhoney & Tjapukai !CONGRATULATIONS!

Killer is a developement of the Su Doku puzzle and has many of the same rules.

Again, it is a logic puzzle in which you have to fill every row, column and block of nine cells (technically a nonet) with the numbers one to nine without omission or repetition.

In addition, there is a second group of blocks - cages, marked here in purple - which can have no repetitions either.

To solve a killer puzzle you need to spot the number in the top left of each cage. This tells you how much the numbers in the cells of that cage add up to.

In the puzzle below, you can see the cage at the top right-hand column has a 3 in it, so the numbers 1 & 2 go in there and cannot occur in any of the cells beneath or in the top right-hand nonet. This however, does not tell which way round the 1 and 2 should be - that you will have to work out from context.

Similarly, the cage just to the left of this has the number 17, so must have an 8 and 9, because no other numbers can fit.

Below is a table of the possible combinations for each cage:

Number in Top Left:

Possible Number Permutations in a 2 Cell Cage:

3
1 & 2
4
1 & 3 (No repetitions mean 2 & 2 won't work)
5
1 & 4 2 & 3
6
1 & 5 2 & 4 (3 & 3 again, is repeition.)
7
1 & 6 2 & 5 3 & 4
8
1 & 7 2 & 6 3 & 5
9
1 & 8 2 & 7 3 & 6 4 & 5
10
1 & 9 2 & 8 3 & 7 4 & 6
11
2 & 9 3 & 8 4 & 7 5 & 6
12
3 & 9 4 & 8 5 & 7
13
4 & 9 5 & 8 6 & 7
14
5 & 9 6 & 8
15
6 & 9 7 & 8
16
7 & 9
17
8 & 9

The same principle applies to larger cages, so the smallest 3 cell cage is 1 + 2 + 3 = 6, while the largest is 7 + 8 + 9 = 24 and so on...

That should be enough to get you started.

To find the cache complete the killer puzzle and use the numbers in the cells marked ABCXY and Z to complete the co-ordinates.
