Complex of archaeological sites of Mezotne in the valley of river Lielupe upper reaches is an important part of Semigallian cultural heritage from the Iron Age. There are five archeological objects on both banks of the river. The main ancient burial field of Mezotne was situated on the right bank and the hill fort with an acient town and port on the Southern – East foot of the hill, the hill fort “Vina kalns”, ancient burial site of Mezotne and the settlement of Ligotni – on the left bank.
The system of fortifications covered an area of 3500 square metre and included two moats, fore – wall 2 –5m high and rampart up to 8m high, which was placed close to the rocky steep of Lielupe. The first fortifications on the main rampart were erected in the 9th century. They suffered damage from frequent attacks ( by Vikings in the beginning and crusaders in the end ). The fortifications were destroied and rebuilt ten times during the period of 10th – 14th century. With each renovation, the main rampart was made higher, fixed with rows of posts and covered with clay. The fortification log buildings were built on the rampart around all edges of the hillfort plateau. The gateway was placed in the Northern part of the main rampat, fixed with posts, the gate building was made of logs and covered with clay.
The bigest battle that took place here started in February of 1220 when Bishop Albert of Livonia attacked Mezotne with an army of 8000 crusaders, Livs and Latgallians. The siege lasted only a few days ( the attack was iterrupted three times ) until Semigallians left the hillfort, but the crusaders and their allies plundered and burned it down. The Semigallians returned to Mezotne in the middle of 13th century. The very last collision that took place here was in 1271: at that time the Livonian Order occupied the fortress without a fight.
