Paleochora is connected by boat with Sougia, Agia Roumeli, Hora Sfakion, Loutro, Elafonissi and Gavdos. Some hiking routes also start from Paleochora, like E4 to the west ending in Elafonissi or to the east to Anidri, Lissos and Sougia.
There is a small Venetian castle on a small hill above the town, which was built in 1279 A.D. on the tip of the peninsula to control the two bays to the east and west. In 1539 the pirate Barbarossa conquered and destroyed it.
To get to the castle and the cache walk up High Street passing a church with a tall bell tower outside. Follow the steps up and very soon you will be in the castle area.
There is a WWII gun emplacement on the east of the plateau but only few remains of the castle itself except some stretches of fairly well preserved walls. There are signs that a few archaeological digs seem to have taken place. The view over the town, the small harbour and the surrounding area is excellent.
The cache is a film canister with a logbook and a tiny FTF certificate. Don’t forget to bring your pen.
Mind the muggles that take their walk at the castle and, please, hide it again carefully.
