The Kangaroo Point Cliffs as seen today are not natural. They were created by a quarrying operation of female prisoners which mined the Volcanic, meta-sedimentary rock (i.e. metamorphosed rock with sedimentary features such as bedding planes still visible) and volcanic ash of Rhyolite lava flows and Ignimbrite (Brisbane Tuff) which form the cliffs. These meta-sediments form a band running through much of Brisbane, underlie other rocks of this area and are found along a wide zone for some distance both north and south of our city. Brisbane Tuff is also visible north of city CBD in Springhill area (GC1KK3E). Mining occurred for 90 years between the 1880s and 1970s. These lavas and Ash were deposited in the Tertiary period about 220 - 230 million years ago and filled an ancient river valley. They currently form the banks of the Brisbane River. Ignimbrite (Brisbane tuff). This is a tough, welded rock with attractive surfaces popular for building and walls when it was readily available. Its age is approximately 220 million years. It resulted from an ash flow; a dense cloud blasted out of an explosive volcano at an extremely high temperature. When it settled the ash was still hot enough to weld into a tough rock filling valleys and low lying areas some distance from the original cone. Further from the flow source, the rock formed is less firmly welded (as the original flow cooled).

QUESTIONS:

To "find / register" this cache must: prove that visited the site and answer the following questions by sending an email / message Geocaching, with answers (in Portuguese or in English, only) to our profile.

Only later, sending the answers, and as the "guidelines" for EarthCaches should make your registration! They will be removed from all records that do not meet these requirements.

1. What are the main colour of the cliffs and what other colours are there?

2. Estimate the height of the cliffs?

3. History suggest these cliffs were made by quarrying – can you see evidence of that, give reasons why ?

4. Is there other signs of erosion visible now, what do you think is the main cause of erosion if there is and why?

5. TASK (not optional): You must take a picture of yourself, where do you show up, (or with a paper / plaque with your geocaching nickname and the date of the visit) and that proves your presence in the GZ of this EC - no spoilers please. This photo must be placed in your log or sent by email or Geocaching messaging system, to the owner!

We do not respond to your touch, unless there is a "problem" with their answers or register.
