Makwawa Campsite Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

A1HydeAndSeek: Thanks for all the visits to this remote campsite. I received some information suggesting the site was partly destroyed in a recent storm and the last visit seems to have confirmed this. The camp site warden who looked after the cache probably has better things to do. Still there is the cache at the Scout Association of Malawi (SAM) HQ in Lilongwe looked after by the office staff and an Earth Cache on the south edge of Lake Malawi.

Geocache Description:

A traditional cache placed at the Makwawa National Scout Campsite of the Scout Association of Malawi (S.A.M.)

IMPORTANT: Please place the cache back as you find it to protect it from locals and the local monkeys!

The Scout Association of Malawi was reestablised in 1999 after being banned from the 1970 to 1994 under the dictatorship of President Hastings Kamuzu Banda. It became a member of WOSM in 2005. Before 1964 Malawi was part of Nyasaland and Rhodesia where Scouting had flourished since 1909.

The New Scout Association of Malawi (S.A.M.) has its main office in Lilongwe and as of 2009 the Director is Steve Kanene (Chief Chembe from Monkey Bay area!). The number of members is growing fast. As of May 2008 WOSM had it shown with 4000 members and 1 year later in April 2009 it had 10500. The girls belong to their own organisation MAGGA.

S.A.M. has established three campsites, one in each administrative region in Malawi. Makwawa is the largest and most well established. The estimated capacity is 150 although plans to clear more camping areas and upgrade the infrastructure are underway so that a National Jamboree can be held there maybe as early as 2010.

The cache is a box where there maybe tradeable Scouting items like badges, however, the most useful trade for this cache is time and energy. Many different Scouting groups from the USA, Scotland, England and Norway, and others, have given time, money and effort in establishing the campsite but more work is needed to develop it further.

The cache is placed by AAHydeAndSeek during the second Advanced Woodbadge course, 19th - 23rd August 2009.

The campsite is open to non-scouts and is an excellent base for exploring the Zomba plateau.

Welcome to Makwawa.
