Geocache Description:

This cache is part of the Church Micro Series. Situated near to St Michael & All Angels church in Steeple Dorset, not far from Kimmeridge between the villages of Tyneham and Corfe Castle. You are looking for a Small Clip-Box. Wheelchair users will need assistance.

Steeple church has an association with the Lawrence and de Wessington (Washington ) family’s through the marriage of Edmund Lawrence and heiress Agnes de Wessington in 1390. Who moved to Steeple in 1540, a junior member John Washington moving to Virginia who’s great grandson George became the first president of the U.S.A. The Coat of Arms of the two families combined to incorporate the “Crusader Cross “of Lawrence and the “Bars & Mullets” - (Stars & Stripes) of Washington. This same crest is identical to that on the signet ring of George Washington, and “inspired the stars and stripes for the flag of the U.S.A.” www.thedorsetpage.com/locations/Place/S220.htm &

In honour of this association the church was recently presented with the Washington Flag by that City’s Mayor. It also has a barrel organ dating back to 1858.
