The Koralpe (also called "Koralm") is a mountain range in southern Austria with an elevation of 2140 meters at its highest point. It consists mostly of metamorphic rock of which some parts are of interest to geologist and to stone collectors. The area around Weinebene for example is the largest known lithium deposit in Europe. Quartz and Feldspar provided a basis for glass and procelain industry in the area in the past.
In 2001 the so-called "Geopark Glashütten" was opened as a part of the EU "Koralm Crystal Trail" project. It's a unique area in the center of the little village Glashütten where stone samples of the Koralpe area were brought together to form an unique area where one can see (and feel) the various different types of rock that are present in the Koralpe mountains at a single place. It features more than twenty different samples that were collected in the Koralpe area, went through a special cutting process in order to show the specific stone structure and brought to this place. All samples feature a description of their structure and their origin including historic information about their creation millions of years ago and the place where the specific sample has been brought from. One of their newest samples is from a recent train tunnel construction project in the area.
The middle of the area is the location of a special artificially created "geologic component" - they call it that way - consisting of more than 25 different types of rock.
The area is freely accessible in the center of the little village with plenty of parking space around.
In order to log this cache you'll have to mail me the answers to the following questions:
- The Eklogit (Metagabbro) from Wielfresen/St. Anna consists of..?
- Spodumenpegmatit contains Lithium - in which mineral and how does it look like?
- How many different rock samples (=lines on the sign) are part of the "geologic component"?
- Look for a special sample - a mill stone. It consists of which type of rock?
- Estimate the weight of the most heavy sample at this place (in metric tons)
In addition please add a picture of yourself - preferrably showing your gps-receiver - to your online log, taken at the location in front or next to the central "geologic component".

Die Koralpe - auch Koralm genannt - ist ein Gebirgszug im Süden Österreichs mit einer Höhe von 2140 Metern am höchsten Punkt. Sie besteht hauptsächlich aus metamorphen Gestein die teilweise für Geologen und Steinsammler interessant sind. Das Gebiet um die Weinebene ist beispielsweise die grösste Lithium-Lagerstätte Europas. Quarz und Feldspat in diesem Gebiet waren früher Grundlage für die Glas- und Porzellanindustrie.
2001 wurde der "Geopark Glashütten" als Teil des EU-Projekts "Koralm Kristall Trail" eröffnet. Es handelt sich dabei um einen Platz im Zentrum des kleinen Orts Glashütten wo Gesteinsblöcke des Koralpengebiets zusammengetragen wurde um einen einzigartigen Platz zu schaffen an dem die verschiedenen Gesteinstypen des Koralpengebiets gesehen und gefühlt werden können. Mehr als 20 ausgesuchte Gesteinsblöcke wurden gesammelt, zugeschnitten und in den Geopark gebracht. Jeder Gesteinsblock verfügt über eine Beschreibung seiner Strukur und Herkunft. Eines der neuesten Stücke stammt von einem Tunnelbauprojekt für eine Bahnstrecke.
Im Zentrum des Geoparks befindet sich ein kuenstlich geschaffener "Geologischer Baustein" bestehend aus mehr als 25 verschiedenen Gesteinsarten.
Der Park befindet sich quasi im Zentrum des Ortes und ist frei zugänglich. Parkplätze sind zur Genüge vorhanden.
Um diesen Cache zu loggen musst du mir die Antworten auf folgende Fragen mailen:
- Der Eklogit (Metagabbro) aus Wielfresen/St. Anna besteht aus..?
- Spodumenpegmatit enthält Lithium - in welchem Mineral und wie sieht dieses aus?
- Aus wievielen verschiedenen Gesteinstypen (=Zeilen am Schild) besteht der "Geologische Baustein"?
- Suche einen speziellen Stein - einen Mühlstein. Aus welcher Art von Stein besteht dieser?
- Schätze das Gewicht des schwersten Gesteinsblocks des Parks (in Tonnen)
Weiters füge bitte ein Bild von dir - vorzugsweise das GPS zeigend - aufgenommen vor oder neben dem zentralen "Geologischen Baustein" zu deinem Onlinelog hinzu.
