Esta cache localiza-se no ponto mais a sul de Portugal
continental: o Cabo de Santa Maria, um ponto na curva da praia da
Ilha da Barreta, também chamada de Ilha Deserta e de Ilha do Cabo
de Santa Maria, o nome mais comum antes da ilha ter sido dividida
em duas aquando da construção do canal da Barra Nova, dando origem
à Ilha da Barreta (do lado Oeste) e à Ilha da Culatra (no lado
Leste), ilhas-barreira da Ria Formosa.
A Ilha Deserta, tal como o nome indica, é desabitada, mas isso
não quer dizer que não seja frequentada por diversas pessoas
durante todo o ano. No verão é normal algumas centenas de
veraneantes virem aqui à praia, aproveitando o areal a perder de
vista (tem cerca de 9 km de extensão) e a água quente. Encostado à
Barra Nova existe um restaurante/apoio de praia que está aberto
todo o ano e uma zona de praia vigiada com toldos. É aí também que
se encontra o cais onde os barcos que transportam os visitantes
ancoram.
Durante os meses de Verão, entre Junho e Setembro, existe uma
carreira regular de barcos que partem do Cais da Porta Nova em Faro
(entre a marina e o Largo de S. Francisco, no exterior da muralha
da zona histórica), com partidas às 10h, 11h30m, 13h e 15h. Nos
restantes meses a ligação também é assegurada por barco, mas os
horários são mais incertos. Para além do serviço "normal" existem
também vários táxis marítimos que fazem a ligação com a ilha.
Quando chegarem à ilha podem aceder ao local da cache de duas
formas diferentes: ou seguindo cerca de 1700m pela areia, junto ao
mar, ou indo por uma passadeira de madeira que começa um pouco a
norte do restaurante, seguindo pelo lado da Ria Formosa e acabando
perto da cache. Nesse caso contem com cerca de 2300 metros.

This cache is located in the southernmost place of continental
Portugal, the Santa Maria Cape, a point in the curve of Barreta
Island, also called Deserta Island, a barrier-island of Ria
Formosa.
Like the name shows (Deserta=Desert), this island is not
inhabited, but that doesn't mean that's not frequented by several
people during all year. In the Summer it's usual a few hundred
persons come here to the beach, taking advantage of the large
extension of sand (about 9 km) and the hot sea water. Right next to
the Barra Nova channel (the water channel that divides Deserta and
Culatra islands) there is a restaurant, that's open all year and a
guarded beach zone with beach awnings. It is also there that is
located the dock where the boats that make the connection between
Faro and this island arrive.
During
the Summer months, from June to September, there is a regular line
of boats that depart from the Porta Nova dock in Faro (between the
marina and the S. Francisco square, outside the old town's walls),
at 10am, 11:30am, 1pm and 3pm. In the other months the connection
is also assured by boat, but the timetable is more uncertain.
Beyond the "normal" service there are also some maritime taxis that
can take you to the island
When you
arrive to the island you can reach the cache place through two
different ways: walking about 1700m through the sand, next to the
sea, or walk on a wooden pathway that starts a little north of the
restaurant, following the Ria Formosa side of the island and
finishing near the cache site. In that case expect a walk of about
2300m.
