area between skanstes street and ganibu dambis is used for cargo railway. it is terra incognita for a lot of people living in Riga. there is a nice footpath across the area, trailheads are at N 56 58.369 E 24 06.958 and N 56 58.334 E 24 06.744 respectively.

Cache is located in the vicinity of railway station "Riga-krasta ganibu parks", it is used as storage area for carriages coming to/from port of Riga.

A brief history of Skanste neighbourhood.
There were extensive pastureland north of Riga canal in 14th and 15th centuries. Horses, cows and other livestock were mainly driven by Jekaba street. In 1720s Russian tsar Peter the Great had a bright idea to move Riga city to current suburb of Sarkandaugava and ordered to fill up some part of river Daugava, thus forming Skanste.
In 18th century 4 rows of willow trees were planted along Ganibu dambis (Pastureland dam in translation). There were gardens of Riga citizens and summer cottages along the street, followed by pastureland further away from Ganibu dambis. Major floods of 1807. caused a lot of damage in the area. The rest of housing was burned in 1812, when rumors of advancing Napoleon's army were met by severe precautions - everything outside city walls was burned to ground. In 20th century this area was used for gardens again. Railway arrived here in 1902, with a cargo station. Shunting yard, storage grounds and warehouses for goods and access roads were built, and this area is still used for cargo railway needs. There are railroad connections to different parts of port of Riga.
Until 1965 hipodrome was located nearby, followed by a colony of small gardens. In 2005. some parts of the area were assigned to build arena for ice hockey world championship and other sports facilities.
