STAR 4
Position
Like every location on earth has coordinates, all stars or other
object in the universe have their coordinates.
There are object that move, like planets and of wich therefor the
coordinates are changing, but most object have constant
coordinates.
These coordinates are only valid for a certain period, because they
are changing under the precession of the earth.
This period is called an epoch. At this time we are speaking of
epoche 2000.
The values for the coordinates are exact for this year exact, but
considering the precession is very slow the coordinates are value
for approximately 50 years.
We are not speaking of north-south ore east-west coordinates
but:
- declination = DEC (given by a d)
- right ascension = RA (given with an a)
DEC is comparable to our north-south coordinates.
It is the arc distance of the sky object north or south of the sky
equator.
The sky equator is the line where our equator cuts the sky object.
So vertical on the sky equator (angle 90 degrees) are our
poles.
North of the equator is positive, south is negative.
The DEC is an angle wich is expressed in degrees.
So teh polar star, wich is in our north, has a DEC of almost +90
degrees and the southpole -90 degrees.
RA is more difficult.
Like there is a point zero on earth for the east-west coordinates
(Greewich meridian), There is also one for the RA.
This we call the spring point. This is the point at the sky equator
where the sun is at the start of the astonomical spring. From here
an angle of the RA can be measured in the east and west direction.
The RA makes an right-angle to the DEC. The RA is expressed in
hours, minutes and seconds.
Increasing from 0 hours 0 minutes and 0 seconds to 23 hours 59
minutes and 59 seconds in easterly direction.
Each sky object has its own RA and DEC.
Even centuries ago people saw pictures in the sky and named them:
zodiacs.
- Nowadays there are clear understandings of wich part of the
sky belongs to wich zodiac.
Use for the puzzle the Sky part of Google Earth or the new
Worldwide Telescope from Microsoft.
Don’t zoom to far, than mistakes will happen.
And now what it is all about:
Solve the puzzle and find the cache at the given location:
Write down the code you will find inside the cache
I
In wich zodiac is the star with the following coordinates?
Use the oficial names like Leo, Ursa major etc.
RA 14h 15m 41s en DEC +19° 11’ 14’'
RA 00h 40m 30s en DEC +56° 32’ 15’’
RA 20h 41m 26s en DEC +45° 16’ 49’’
RA 07h 45m 19s en DEC +28° 01’ 35’’
RA 10h 08m 22s en DEC +11° 58’ 01’’
A = number of zodiacs beginning with C
II
Search for the RA and DEC for the following:
Polaris
Capella
Castor
Betelgeuse (in orion)
Spica
B = add up the number of whole hours RA.
III
Here a list of zodiacs:
1 Taurus
2 Monoceros
3 Auriga
4 Eridanus
5 Gemini
6 Lepus
C = Number of the zodiac that does not border with Orion.
You wil find GZ at:
S 34 41.(B + (6 X A) + (6 X C ))
E 150 50.(( 25 X B ) + ( 20 X C ) + (11 X A ))
