Geocache Description:

One of my favorite lakes in Idaho. A beautiful lake with a fantastic hike in.

Curtis Lake is a great little lake set back in the mountains just east of Cascade and Horsethief that my father and I began hiking into when I was younger, and made it a summer tradition. We go every summer that we can, and now we take along my two nephews and my son as well.

The lake is a rarity in that there are no streams feeding the lake, and there are no streams leaving the lake. It is filled entirely with mountain run off from melted snow. The lake is filled with trout, both cutthroat and rainbow. Another interesting fact about the lake is that it is almost perfectly round.

There are used to be two areas that you could park to hike in using the suggested hiking trail. However, in the last three years or so, the Forest Service has closed the old jeep trail that went up the hillside, so you'll have to park on the main road. You can park at the listed parking coords, or you can go around the corner on the road and park where the road ends.

Kids can make the hike in, my 7 year old son did just fine. If you go much younger, though, you may have to carry them in a few places.

Even if you don't fish, this lake will make a fantastic hike and a beautiful place to have a picnic. Lots of wildlife to see, last time I went in we saw a couple moose.

The cache is an ammo can stocked with some fishing tackle and a couple of toys for the kids.

Enjoy!
