Un peu d’histoire
Les plus anciens vestiges découverts sur l'emplacement de Saint Gengoux, semblent dater le village de l'époque mérovingienne. Le nom du village demeure un mystère jusqu'à l'an mil.
The oldest remains found at the site of Saint Gengoux, seem to date the village of the Merovingian period. The name of the village remains a mystery until an mil.
En 925, les Bénédictins de Cluny placent l'église sous le vocable de saint Gengoul (d'où le nom de la cité). Quelques années plus tard, l'église sera offerte en don aux moines de Cluny.
In 925, the Benedictines of Cluny, place this church under the vocable of St Gengoul (hence the name of the city). A few years later, the church will be offered as a gift to the monks of Cluny.
En 1120, une nouvelle église est construite. In 1120, a new church is built
En 1166, Saint Gengoux et ses alentours sont cédés au Roi Louis VIII. In 1166, Saint Gengoux and its surroundings are sold to King Louis VIII.
En 1200, le Roi accorde une charte royale à la ville, qui devient, en 1246, Saint Gengoux le Royal. In 1200, the King granted a Royal Charter to the city, which became in 1246, Saint Gengoux le Royal.
En 1793, suite à la Révolution, Saint Gengoux le Royal, devient Jouvence ; c’est de cette époque que vient le nom de jouvenceaux et jouvencelles que l’on donne aujourd’hui aux habitants.
A la Restauration, le nom redeviendra Saint Gengoux le Royal, puis en 1870, la ville prendra son nom définitif de Saint Gengoux le National.
In 1793, following the Revolution,Saint Gengoux le Royal becomes Jouvence;this is where the name comes Jouvenceaux and Jouvencelles that we now give to the villagers.
At the Restoration, the name become again Saint Gengoux le Royal, then in 1870, the city takes its present name of St. Gengoux le National
Garez-vous près de la Tour François 1er « dite de Lierre ». Lieu d'entraînement de la société des Archers, puis des Arquebusiers (on y pratiquait le tir a l’oiseau ou papegai : La cible (un petit oiseau de bois) était sur une perche placée sur la tour ; l’archer devait l’atteindre avec une flèche a la pointe garnie d’une boule de cuir).
Park your car near the Tour François 1er "called ivy tower".Place for training of the society of Archers, then Arquebusiers (they practiced shooting of the the bird or papegai :The target (a small bird of wood) was placed on a pole on the tower; the archer had to hit it with an arrow with a covered tip of a ball of leather).

Remontez un peu la rue pour découvrir l’église qui fut construite en 1120 par les bénédictins de Cluny. Walk up the street a bit to discover the church, that was built in 1120 by the Benedictines of Cluny.
Elle mesure 41 m de long et 16 de large. Elle fut plusieurs fois pillée et restaurée. It measures 41 m long and 16 wide. It was sacked several times and restored.
En 1802, 3 chapelles attenantes à l'église furent détruites, pour construire sur leur emplacement, une halle aux blés. In 1802, 3 chapels adjoining the church were destroyed to build on their location, a Hall wheats.
Depuis août 2004, l'église est inscrite à la Fédération des Sites Clunisiens. Since August 2004, the church is listed on the Federation of Sites Clunisiens
La cache se trouve maintenant tout près, c’et une micro aimantée 9x5x2 cm contenant un log book et un crayon (attention aux moldus ! : comme pour toutes les micros situées en ville le challenge est de ne pas attirer l’attention et de se logger en toute discrétion)

Rejoignez un bel escalier en encorbellement appartenant a une maison typique du XVIème siècle où résidait le bailli, avec échauguette où se tenait un veilleur de nuit. Un peu plus loin l’ancienne fontaine qui donna son nom à la ville en 1793 : La fontaine de Jouvence. Cette fontaine était encore considérée comme miraculeuse au 18ème siècle. Elle alimente en eau Le lavoir construit en 1857 A little later the old fountain, which gave the city its name in 1793: « La fontaine de Jouvence ». This fountain was still regarded as miraculous in the 18th century. It supplies water to the wash house built in 1857
