This cemetery is the final resting place of Captain Martin Van Buren Bates and his wife, Anna Swan Bates, commonly known as "The Giants of Seville". The couple became famous while touring with various circus acts throughout the world, including Ringling Bros., during the 1860's and 1870's. The couple eventually settled in Seville, after passing through the area on tour. They bought a large farm outside of town and had it modified to meet their needs, with 14 foot ceilings and specially built furniture. The farm was eventually torn down a few decades back, but their story still lives on through the efforts of the local historical society. Be sure to walk around and look at the memorial for these "larger than life" residents.
