Geocache Description:

The church stands in the centre of the town at the top of the High Street opposite the Blue Boar. The earliest parts of the building date from the 14th century and it was extended during the 16th century. It was a coaching inn and the courtyards and stables can still be seen. The tower is unique in being an equilateral triangle and of Norman period. The tower holds eight bells. The church contains a small crypt and a 14th century south aisle with statues on the outside to six town worthies.

The Washington Memorial Window was unveiled on the 5th July 1928 and dedicated to the memory of Laurence Washington (buried here and great-great Grandfather to George – see Purleigh Cache GC1MFB9) This window can be seen in the chancel of the D'Arcy Chapel on the south side of the Church.

The south aisle is known as the D'Arcy Aisle after Sir Robert D'Arcy who was MP for the Borough of Maldon in the reign of Henry VI. He was also a lay-brother of the Order of Friars at Colchester. The D'Arcy Chapel was doubtless built by his generosity and is where members of his family were buried.

At the rear of the Church is the Vicarage a beautiful medieval house. The west wing is a priest’s house built in 1449.
