Main Duck Island is located about 32km southwest of Kingston in the
open waters of Lake Ontario. You will need a boat, navigation
skills and good weather to reach this hide. The cache is hidden
above a rocky beach at a small cove suitable for anchoring when the
wind is from the south or west.
There is a trailhead about 50m west of GZ which leads to the
rough path around the island. If you approach from the shore side
to the trailhead, you can easily wade to GZ along the beach.
The island is said to have a great number of snakes. They mostly
stick to the shoreline, and usually avoid people given the chance.
As far as I know, none are poisonous.
Beware of sheets of plywood, or their remnants. These are the
feeble covers of abandoned wells. They pose a real danger,
especially to kids...don't stand on them! Long grass covers much of
the island, so be aware of the possibility of ticks. Like most of
the islands in the region, poison ivy flourishes here. Do not
attempt to bushwack to GZ. Approach from the water, or wade from
the trailhead.
Please replace (and add) stones on top of the cache so that it
won't be swept away in a storm.
There is a sunken barge in the center of the cove, not far from
the cache. If approaching by boat, the barge is usually visible
from the surface as you approach the shore. This vessel sank during
a storm with a strong north wind, showing the danger of anchoring
in this cove.

This cache will be an adventure. I think this island is an
incredible place of unspoiled natural beauty and history. I wanted
to leave my small mark...that Hamburking Was Here. Good luck to all
seekers, and please post lots of pictures.
