Geocache Description:

One of the Golden area's most popular hikes.

The Mummery Glacier trail is an outstanding hike that can take you pretty well up to the glacier. As little as 15 years ago, one could climb right in, but due to the glacier receding so dramatically over the years, only experienced climbers should attempt it now. None the less, you can get pretty close without too much danger. Be very careful with the river crossing. There was a well-constructed bridge across at one time but two summers ago, a large rain fall caused the river to change course, leaving the bridge high and dry. At this time, you can usually jump rocks early in the day but in the afternoon, there is a good chance you will need to ford the river. Use extreme caution as the water is very fast and very cold and a slip could lead to serious injury. For those who do make it to the cache, it is along the ridge line near the bottom of the road plains. I was planning to place it near the start of the ridge trail but due to the river making people punch new paths through the forest, I placed it where we came up. The cache is a small lock and lock that contains a log book and some small trade items. Update - July 9 2019. It appears that a new road has been put in so people can once again drive to the trail head. See the cache log from Viajero Perdido.
