Geocache Description:

Placed on Hill 107 to the west of the town of Maleme overlooking a military airfield.
parking by the small church then a short slightly uneven walk thought the olive trees to the cache, on the way passing the remains of several bunkers (you can look inside at least one of them) PLEASE NOTE MODIFIED CO ORDINATES N 35° 31.123 E 023° 49.935 Please post logs in English

During world war 2 a crucial battle was fought over the possession of the airstrip near Maleme, this battle was costly in terms of human life http://www.crete-1941.org.uk/

On the morning of 20th May, 1941, the Germans launched the first airborne invasion in history. They chose the Greek island of Crete in the Eastern Mediterranean.

"To lose Crete because we had not sufficient bulk of forces there would be a crime"; Churchill in his book "The Second World War"

Many young men, Allied and German, died on Crete, a long way from home. If you go to the island on holiday, do take the time to visit the war cemeteries.

My cache has been placed at a defensive position occupied by the New Zealanders during this battle.

Should the cache require servicing either e mail me or visit Manos at the Sunny Suites ( approx 1 km from the cache), he has agreed to maintain it in my absence. The cache is a large plastic container with a diary etc. and is placed by the metal memorial cross on the hill.

Please take a little time to remember those victims of this dreadful battle, also enjoy the panoramic view from Hill 107
