Geocache Description:

Check out the statue of Herman B. Wells! I can't believe my girlfriend wrecked his Buick!

This one could have been in the "Plain Sight" series, but hey, you're getting the idea. This one is being placed just before a "meet and greet" event thrown by the Bloomington Geocachers and isn't very far from the listed location. It might be a little too obvious, but that's the chance we take with urban caches. Good Luck!

Ah yes, Herman B. Wells. Indiana University never had a champion like this stalwart. He lived and breathed I.U. and worked for the good of the university 'til the day he died. When you go for this cache (hid in plain sight, by the way) you can afford yourself a photo op sitting next to a remarkable likeness of the old guy. The bronze casting accurately portrays Herman's fire plug physique, and has him with his helping hand outstretched, as his always was. For most, this gives you a chance to get a picture shaking his hand. For some (okay, a few friends of mine and I are guilty here) you can get a picture of Herman giving someone a goose. If you've ever gone for the cache "Reading enlighten our lives" you've been very close to Herman's home, situated across tenth street just north of the I.U. library. You could always tell if he was home by looking for his gray Buick. As it turns out, after he passed, a good friend affiliated with the I.U. alumni who knew I was driving a junker asked if I could use a car. Turns out it was Herman's Buick, and he only wanted $1,400. (This thing was like new!) A short time later, it was mine. Well, sort of... My girlfriend at the time quickly assumed control of Herman's Buick. What a sweet ride it was. WAS, that is. One fateful evening as she was driving Herman's Buick out to our Owen County home she rounded a curve and sent one of Bambi's relatives to the promised land, and pretty much totalled the Buick. That car never was the same. Neither was the deer. Anyway, if you're ever looking for a really cozy spot for lunch or happy hour you should stop by a little pub just south of the square on the East side of College avenue. Hanging on the wall is a plaque with a set of antlers and a Buick hood ornament. It lists a date and the name of my girlfriend (at the time) with the notation, "Taken with Herman's Buick". I miss her. But man, I miss that Buick.

So there you go. This thing could hold a few coins or something if anyone wants to leave something small. But right now there's just a little log book in a baggie. Bring a pen or pencil. Maybe act like you're taking pictures if there's muggles about. PLEASE put it back right where you find it as sight angles are this one's best defense. Thanks for looking!
