Planting apple trees requires patience. It takes several years from planting to first harvest. The shores of Lake Ontario provide excellant conditions for this crop. Moderate springs and cool crisp fall days combine to produce this favourite fruit. The flower stage is a critical time for this crop. A frost could kill many of the flowers, resulting in a poor crop. Cool wet days keep bees in their hives, and therfore not busy in the apple blooms, doing the vital job of pollinating. If pollination doesn't occur, once again, there is no fruit. Harvest is still by hand, and many orchards allow the public to "Pick Your Own"
