Der Basaltbruch am Ascherhübel
Der Ascherhübel gehört zu den nördlichen Ausläufern des großen nordböhmischen Vulkangebietes (Böhmische Mittelgebirge). In dem am 417,5 m hohen Gipfel des Ascherhübels befindlichen ehemaligen Steinbruch findet man in dicken abgerundeten Säulen abgesonderten Basalt als ein basisches Vulkangestein. Der Steinbruch stellt einen randlichen Anschnitt eines Vulkanschlotes dar. Wie am Landberg hat auch am Ascherhübel basaltische Lava die Porphyr- und Sandsteindecke des Tharandter Waldes durchbrochen. |

The basalt quarry at the Ascherhübel
The "Ascherhübel" belongs to the northern part of the north Bohemian volcano area. On top of the Ascherhübel (417,5 m) there is a former quarry with thick rounded columns of isolated basalt (volcanic rock / whinstone). The quarry forms the edge of an vent. Similar to the "Landberg" the basaltic lava broken through the layer of porphyry and sandstone of the forest "Tharandter Wald". |
| Für Überraschung in der Fachwelt sorgten vor einigen Jahren Altersbestimmungen des Gesteins (anhand des Zerfallsgrades eines radioaktiven Kaliumisotops). Demnach ist der Ascherhübel weniger als 10 Millionen Jahre alt - und damit wesentlich jünger als die anderen Basaltkuppen des Ost-Erzgebirges, die bereits vor etwa 25 Millionen Jahren erstarrten. Wir finden hier am Nordrand des Tharandter Waldes also die - bislang - letzten Grüße, die im Verlaufe der Erdgeschichte aus dem Erdmantel (aus etwa 80 km Tiefe) an die Erdoberfläche geschickt wurden! |
To the surprise of the professional circles the whinstone's age is less than ten million years and therefore much younger than the other basalt quarries in the eastern "Erzgebirge" mountains which are already 25 million years old. So we found here on the northern side of the forest "Tharandter Wald" the last regards of the earth's mantle (approximately 80 km depth). |
| In dem alten Steinbruch (bis 1913 in Betrieb) ist auf 80 m Länge und durchschnittlich 16 m Höhe der Basalt aufgeschlossen. Die markante Ausbildung der überwiegend fünf- bis sechseckigen Säulen veranlasste die sächsischen Behörden bereits 1939 zur Unterschutzstellung als Naturdenkmal. Analog der Entstehung des "Porphyrfächers" entstanden auch die Basaltsäulen infolge der allmählichen Abkühlung des Magmas und der damit einhergehenden Volumenschrumpfung. Auf dem Weg nach oben hatte die Schmelze auch Teile des Gneis-Grundgebirges sowie der Porphyr- und der (darüber lagernden) Sandsteindecke mit sich gerissen, die als Gesteinsbruchstücke nunmehr im Basalt zu finden sind. |
In the old quarry (active until 1913) the basalt (whinstone) is exposed at a length of 80 meters and a heigth of 16 meters. Because of the characteristic of the mainly pentagonally and hexagonally columns, the public authorities of Saxony decided to list it under conservation of nature in 1939. Analogous to the formation of the "Porphyrfächer" the columnar basalt also were formed by cooling down of the magma and in keeping with the shrinking of the volume. On the way to the top the melting transported parts of gneiss, porphyry and sandstone which can be found in the whinstone today. |
| Nicht nur unter Geologen erfreut sich der Ascherhübel großer Beliebtheit. Als nahegelegenes Ausflugsziel besuchen auch viele Gäste des Kurortes Hartha den Steinbruch mit dem kleinen "Hexenhäusel". Eine Informationstafel des "Geologischen Freilichtmuseums" erklärt laienverständlich die Entstehung des Ascherhübels. |
Not only for geologists the "Ascherhübel" become popular. As a nearby excursion destination many tourists visit the basalt quarry and the so-called "Hexenhäusl" close-by the quarry. An information board of the "geological open-air museum" will give you more information about the development of the "Ascherhübel". |
