Geocache Description:

The idea for this cache came about while I was looking at a list of the oldest caches by state. The challenge to complete for this cache is to find the twenty-five (25) oldest caches in Massachusetts.

The Concept
Before you can venture out and find this cache you will need to find the twenty-five (25) oldest, still active caches in Massachusetts. After you have found all twenty-five (25) of the oldest caches you can go to the posted cords for this cache and log the final. Of course you will see it is placed near the oldest cache in Massachusetts, First Mass.

If you have found caches that are no longer active, they don’t count. Only caches that are active the day you sign the logbook will count. I reserve the right to ask for a list of caches, and dates of your finds at anytime for verification.

If you have more than required, let us know in your log for example “I have found the 35 oldest”. Or, let us know how many out of the 100 oldest you have found for example “I have found 44 of 100 oldest”. Of course you have to find the twenty-five (25) oldest before logging this cache.

The Oldest Bookmark List
I will maintain a bookmark list with the oldest caches in MA listed by date published. If there were more than one published on a specific day then they are marked A, B, C, etc. For example, on 02-04-2001 there were three caches published. They have been marked A, B & C making Nobscot Wood the twelfth oldest, Nobscot Mt the thirteenth oldest and Big Blue the fourteenth. If you set the bookmark list to show 25 per page it will show you the twenty-five oldest.

The bookmark list also contains the archived ones that I could find. They are at the end of the list and the dates are preceded with an X. They don’t count towards the challenge, but please let me know if I have missed any.

Some Details
I made this cache a Mystery because it is a challenge cache; however, this cache has only the final and no stages and is at the posted coordinates. The terrain and difficulty is based on the maximum of the twenty-five caches. The final for this cache would be rated a 2/2.5. Please note the attributes are for the final only. Final note is that if a cache in the top 25 gets archived, then I will post a note to the page and the change in the caches needed will take place at the time the note posts.

Good luck and good caching,
Loch Cache

Additional Duty
I was looking at the different caches on the list and see many that I have not done. I also see that some of them are listed as Needs Maintenance. An example is Eric’s Adventure which was placed by Eric and Fran 1/7/2001 but they have not been on since June 2001. In October 2004 Munin replaced the container even though he did not own the cache. It was marked on 11-12-07 an again on 4-2-09 as needing maintenance.

I think that as geocachers we should be aware of these older caches that need some help. Perhaps we could get some caching karma by helping them out. If you read that a cache needs some TLC bring along an extra log or a replace a box. For many of these older caches the owners are no longer online so adoption will never happen. Thanks.

Congrats to doublewe and Bigrock95 for their efforts to get the Co-FTF on this cache. doublewe needed to pick up 8 caches and Bigrock95 needed 10.

Interestingly, out of 2448 cachers who had found at least one of the twenty-five before publication of this challenge, only 15 cachers needed 10 or less to complete the challenge. Only one cacher, WaldenRun, had already found all 25. (He found them all by 10/16/2003)
